Day is the best choice for GOP
Email Print
When Republicans in Minnesota’s First Congressional District go to the polls Tuesday to select their candidate to oppose Democratic Rep. Tim Walz in the general election, they will be faced with two worthy candidates — Dr. Brian Davis, the Mayo physician from Rochester, and Owatonna’s own state Sen. Dick Day. It is a primary contest that the powerbrokers in the state GOP wished never would’ve happened. Yet, for the voters, it is an important primary to determine not only who could best win the election in November, but — and more importantly — who will be able to best represent the concerns of all citizens of the district in Washington, D.C. For that reason, Dick Day is the better choice.

Certainly, Dr. Davis brings much to the table in terms of his built-in Rochester constituency and his inside knowledge of the health-care system — an increasingly important issue in the national debate. However, when contrasted with Day’s experience, Davis has much less knowledge of and experience in rural and small-town Minnesota. His Minnesota life has been spent in Rochester, now the state’s third largest city, and he has no elective experience that has put him in touch with the needs of most of the communities he would be representing in Congress.

Sen. Day, on the other hand, brings to the table a much wider experience. Growing up in Rochester and working for IBM in that community, Dick Day understands the people and needs of that fine city. But, he has also lived for many years in Owatonna — a growing city, to be certain, yet still a city that is not far removed from its rural roots. He has also served in many elective offices — from city council to the county commission to the state senate. In the Minnesota Senate, Sen. Day took on leadership positions for the party. Through his years of service and leadership, Dick Day has come to understand the struggles that local and county governments face in serving their constituencies and to understand what it takes to get things done locally and statewide. Dr. Davis, for all his skills, cannot say the same thing.

The experience that Sen. Day brings to the table, coupled with his knowledge of the needs and concerns of citizens across the district — and not just in Rochester — make Dick Day the obvious and best choice for the voters in Tuesday’s Republican primary.
