OWATONNA — Scot Davis and three of his wrestlers will be teaching hundreds of kids proper wrestling technique.
Ames, Iowa-based Championship Productions contacted Davis this spring to do a series of instructional high school wrestling videos. Championship Productions sells a lot of videos and DVDs, but only one high school wrestling series. This year, Owatonna will be the only high school program showcased.
“It’s a great deal for our community,” Davis said. “It gets our name out there.”
Helping Davis were three letter-winners from last year: Hector Millan, Zach Schreiber and Justin Duruji.
“What great exposure for these kids,” Davis said. “They can look at this series the rest of their lives. They can go buy the tape and see themselves wrestling.”
For sophomore-to-be Zach Schreiber it was also a chance to wrestle with Millan, a two-time state medalist.
“Hector is a great wrestler and just to get a chance to wrestle one on one with him is great,” Schreiber said.
Championship Productions will be filming the series Monday and Tuesday, two of the stickiest days so far this summer.
“(Monday) was one of the most humid days we have had this year,” Davis said. “We gave each kid four t-shirts, so they would be able to change shirts when they got sweaty.”
“When I came I didn’t even think I was going to break a sweat,” Millan added. “I thought we were just going to film, but I have had to change my t-shirt like three times.”
After each scene, Davis went to his notebook to see what he wanted to go over next. The notebook, which he has worked on this year, will be a handy tool come winter.
“I had to organize all of my moves,” Davis said. “I have been wanting to get all of my notes together for awhile, but I kept putting it off. This forced me to put things together. Now I have a bible of all of my wrestling moves, which will make my life easier in the future.
“People are going to be buying this series all over the country. I better know what I’m doing.”
