WASECA — Waseca resident Roy Srp was unanimously endorsed by delegates of the Minnesota Independence Party as their candidate for the Senate District 26 seat to be chosen Jan. 26 in a special election. The delegates were required to vote by mail because of the shortened election schedule, according to party officials.

The votes naming Srp the official candidate were tallied Dec. 30.

“It’s important to me that I have been a member of the Independence Party since 1997,” he said.

“I’m very proud of receiving the state endorsement and I look forward to doing a good job as a senator from the district.”

Srp is also getting the support of the Reform Party of Minnesota whose state secretary, Michael Burger of Mankato, said his party supports Srp because of his knowledge of local government as a three-term may of Waseca.

“Roy understands the effect of unfunded mandates the state legislature has put onto the counties and cities. Those unfunded mandates are crippling the counties and cities operations and causing a rise in our property taxes. Roy also understands that budget shift or state aid to schools, counties, and cities is not a fix of the state budget,” Burger said in a statement.

“Of the three candidates, we feel Roy has a independent attitude that will serve the people of his Senate District the best.”

Burger said the Reform Party supports Srp because he will serve the voters rather than the lobbyists.

Srp said he is very proud to be in a position to continue to represent the citizens of Waseca and looks forward to doing the same for the citizens of Owatonna, Fairbault, Blooming Prairie, Morristown, Ellendale and Medford.

He said he has started campaigning.

“Anyone that knows me knows how energetic I am and anyone who doesn’t know me will find out how energetic I am,” he said.

His campaign slogan is, “Srp ... no vowels, no nonsense.”

Srp is running on his five-year record as mayor of Waseca during difficult economic times and the need for all aspects of state government “to live within our means.”

He has also held positions on the city council and the Waseca County Board of Commissioners. Srp is an employee of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad. He was the unsuccessful DFL candidate for the Minnesota House in 1996.

Srp will face Republican Mike Parry and Democrat Jason Engbrect in the special election to be held Jan. 26 to fill the seat vacated by State Sen. Dick Day, Republican of Owatonna, who is becoming a lobbyist for Racino Now.

He said he is looking forward to the candidate forums and, if he has to, will ask the IP Party to organize a debate in Waseca.

If he wants the moderate vote, he needs to explain what his convictions and passions are.

Question:
Did he vote for or against the Waseca pool?
