Email Print
FARGO, N.D. — Nick Scheffert is the only Owatonna wrestler still in the championship bracket at the Rumble on the Red after the first day.

Scheffert went 2-0 with a pin and will take on Scott West’s Luke Zilverberg in the 103-pound quarterfinals today. Scheffert beat Zilverberg 6-4 earlier this season at OHS.

Ten other Owatonna wrestlers are still going. Ben Anderson, Dillin Schultz, Brett Meger, Justin Duruji, Jake Fox, Jordan Zeman, Jeremy Duruji, Tyler Thomas, Coyte Kuefner and Logan Barrett all lost once but stayed alive in the wrestlebacks.

Fox went into the tournament as Owatonna’s only undefeated wrestler, and he won his first match Tuesday. He finally took his first loss when New London-Spicer’s Tanner Tobkin beat him 7-6 in the round of 16.

Owatonna is in second place in the team standings with 111.5 points, just 3.5 behind first-place Rapid City (S.D.) Stevens. Foley is third with 108.5 and Cambridge-Isanti is fourth with 101.

OHS results: 103—Nick Scheffert 2-0 (1 pin); 112—Evan Green 1-2 (1 pin); 119—Ben Anderson 2-1; 125—Dillin Schultz 2-1 (2 pins); 130—Bowen Schultz 0-2; 135—Brett Meger 2-1; 140—Justin Duruji 2-1; 145—Jake Fox 2-1; 152—Jordan Zeman 2-1; 160—Jeremy Duruji 2-1; 171—Tyler Thomas 3-1 (2 pins); 189—Coyte Kuefner 2-1 (2 pins); 215—Logan Barrett 2-1; 285—Josh Woodrich 2-2 (2 pins).

CHAMPLIN — The Huskies will not be spending New Year’s Day at the Xcel Energy Center this season.

The Spartans scored the first three goals of the game and held on to beat Owatonna in the semifinals of the Schwan Cup Bronze Division. If the Huskies had won, they would have played in the championship game Friday at the Xcel.

Instead, OHS (2-6-3) will take on Hudson (Wis.) in the third-place game at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Champlin. OHS lost to Mahtomedi in the championship game last year.

Logan Pirkl and Aaron Brinkman both scored for Owatonna.

BURNSVILLE — Paige Lysne scored two goals and passed an assist, but a late flurry cost the Huskies in the first round of the Burnsville Tournament.

Lysne’s second goal cut the Rails’ lead to 5-4 with 3:31 left in the game, but Proctor scored three goals in the final minutes to pull away. The second of those three goals was an empty-netter.

“It doesn’t matter if you lose by one or by a hundred,” OHS coach Tim Hunst said. “We wanted an opportunity to score more goals. We were going to go down swinging.”

Taylor Disher and Christina Rozeske also scored for Owatonna. Emily Cochran, Cailyn McCauley and Rozeske all had assists. OHS (6-4-1 overall) plays Burnsville at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Wrestling: Despite some valiant efforts, close decisions just didn't swing our way the first day. The full coverage of the brackets can be found at the following URL:
