Huskies pick up first win

FARMINGTON — The Owatonna Huskies found the gym at the newly built Farmington High School very accommodating.

The Huskies defeated the Tigers 51-40 on Tuesday in the first game at the new high school.

“We’re in the history books,” said Owatonna coach John Kuehn. “We’re the first team to win there. I told the girls before the game, ‘We don’t want to be the first team to lose here.’”

For the second straight game, Owatonna junior guard Sarah McCann was red hot from the field in the first half. After she scored 11 points in the first half against Eagan on Saturday, McCann hit four 3-pointers in the first half against Farmington. Backcourt mate Courtney Hayford hit two 3-pointers as the Huskies led 29-16 at halftime.

Hayford finished with 16 points and a team-high five rebounds and five assists.

In the second half, Owatonna went inside to 6-foot-4 center Trisha Benjamin. The junior scored only three points in the first half, but finished the game with 13 points and 16 rebounds. She has two double-doubles this season after a 12-point, 11-rebound performance on Saturday.

Farmington did rally in the second half and pulled within seven points in the closing minutes, but the Huskies (0-0 Big Nine, 1-1 overall) hit enough free throws to earn win No. 1 on the season.

Owatonna will play its third straight nonconference game to start the season. At 7 p.m. Friday, the Huskies will travel to Apple Valley.

Owatonna scoring: Sam Anderson 2; Courtney Hayford 16 (5 assists, 5 steals); Sarah McCann 14; Dani Buswell 6 (9 rebounds); Trisha Benjamin 13 (16 rebounds, 3 blocks). 3-pointers: McCann 4; Hayford 3.
