MEDFORD — Two students from Medford Public School had the opportunity to sing their hearts out on Saturday through participation in the Minnesota Statewide Honor Choir.
Seventh-grader Jacob Hellevik and sixth-grader Kathleen Porter were selected to sing in the Honor Choir at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi.
Sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association, the Honor Choir seeks to bring students with outstanding choral talent together at a variety of levels, including the collegiate level, junior high school level and children’s choirs.
For Hellevik and Porter, that means joining a number of other students at the junior high grade level for a special performance. They have been practicing at least five songs for weeks, by listening to CDs sent out for the Honor Choir and rehearsing during their free time.
“They each have to memorize five to six pieces and the competition was tough,” said Bev Cashman, choir director at Medford. “Over 300 students tried out for each choir, and about 80 were chosen for each choir.”
But this is not the first time that Hellevik and Porter have performed with the Honor Choir. Though they won’t be performing in the same group, both students have participated in the choir before.
Porter said she learned about the choir last year, when one of her peers was getting ready to apply.
“I wanted to know what it was,” said Porter. She said she asked her teacher for more information and immediately jumped on board. “I figured it would be a fun idea.”

Because Porter had such a good time last year, she decided to go out for the choir again.
For Hellevik, it was more of the same, though he had one more year under his belt.
“I’ve been doing it for two years ,” said Hellevik. “I like how you get to go and meet people.”
Both students said choir is something they plan to keep with them throughout the years, even up through high school.
“I like it,” said Hellevik. “You kind of express how you feel.
