OWATONNA — An Owatonna man made his way to court for the first time Monday after allegedly hitting and holding a knife to a woman’s throat in August 2008.

Juan Carrasco, 32, was charged in Steele County District Court with one count of felony second-degree assault and one count of domestic assault.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the 200 block of Elm Avenue around 8:30 a.m. Aug. 17, 2008.

There, officers spoke to a woman who had large scratches on her neck and forehead. She also appeared to be bruised on her elbow, legs and knees and had cuts on her hands.

The woman said she had seen Carrasco the night before at a bar, and when she arrived home that morning he was waiting for her. She said Carrasco is the father of her child and the two had lived together, but he had gotten involved “very bad” with meth.

The victim said Carrasco tackled her and kicked her. He also held a knife to her throat and told her he should finish it. The woman said she thought Carrasco was going to kill her.

A second woman, who had given the victim a ride home that morning also witnessed the attack.

Inside the home, many items had been knocked over or appeared to be thrown. Officers also saw a “one-hitter” pipe and scale where traces of cocaine were found. The woman said the items were Carrasco’s.

The complaint said the woman stopped by the Law Enforcement Center the next day. She had been cleaning and found the knife she thought Carrasco used to attack her under items Carrasco had thrown about in the home.

A warrant complaint was filed against Carrasco in September 2008. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to 10 years in prison and $19,000 in fines.

Cash bail was set at $25,000. Carrasco is scheduled to appear in court next on Nov. 19.

OK, this may be a stupid question and I'm not trying to make the vicitim look bad, but why would she clean her house, as quoted, before going to the police, the next day?!?!?!?!

A simple assumption on my part, but I think she feared the county would take her child away if they saw the living condition. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation.

I am wondering why all of his stuff "drug scale, pipe" were still in the house if he had moved out? and she had a child living there? wouldnt she have gotten rid of all of that when he left? I know that would be the first thing I would do. Maybe he was still kind of living there....

there is usually more to the story than is reported or told to the police.

Poor kids. Can't they require a chastity belt until a 'drivers license' is earned?

does anyone else find it disturbing that this happened in Aug. of '08, and he is just now making his first appearance in court in Nov. of '09?

Well people there is much more to the story than than the paper is saying. he broke into the house the night before all of this happened so NO he was not living there.. he brought the drug stuff with him.( In his bag of clothes that he had.) He trashed the house in the dispute( the cops were called the same day) It was the next day that she was cleaning her house and found the knife she then took it to the police station. ( like the police asked her to do.) The reason it has taken so long is because he fled to Texas and they just caught him. So there you go don't judge people from what you read in the OPP.

crazyhuskey, why don't you get a job at the news paper? Seems you got the facts and they don't.Seems like the news paper better do a lot better job of reporting if people are getting mis led because of missing facts or half stories.
