First annual 5K Turkey Trot to benefit Infants Remembered In Silence (IRIS)
Email Print
FARIBAULT — Runners and walkers of all ages and skill are invited to participate in the 1st Annual IRIS 5K Turkey Trot (timed run, walk, kid’s fun run) on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 26, at the Shattuck-St. Mary Sports Complex located at 1000 Shumway Ave.
Please join IRIS as they walk and run together to raise money to support the important serves that IRIS provides, raise awareness about infant loss, support one another, remember loved ones, and honor tiny lives. All of the proceeds will benefit the local non-profit Infants Remembered in Silence (IRIS), dedicated to offering support, education and resources to parents, families, friends and professionals on the death of a child in early pregnancy or from stillbirth, premature birth, neo-natal death, birth defects, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), illness, accidents, and all other types of infant and early childhood death.
Turkey Trot Committee chairperson, Deanna Kuennen, explains why this event and cause is so important, “A little over three years ago I had no idea that IRIS existed, and then the horrible day came when my husband I and I needed IRIS. Fortunately for me, and for many other families in the area, IRIS exists. My husband and I lost two children – our daughter Hope born a 22 weeks, and our son Augustus stillborn at full-term. We found IRIS after our first loss – and then an IRIS advocate came to our side, held our hands, offered guidance, and helped us learn to live with our new reality. We do not know how we would have survived those darkest days without IRIS – and today it is our turn to give back to an organization that means the world to us and to many others. Sadly many people either experience a loss of a child, or know someone who has lost a child. This event provides an opportunity to raise awareness of IRIS and the invaluable services that IRIS provides, raise money to ensure that IRIS will continue to be able to help families after a loss, and to remember our babies.”
IRIS was founded in 1987 by Diana Sundwall after the full term stillbirth of her son. The resources and support that she needed were not available – so IRIS was formed with the specific goal of assisting parents who experience the death of a child. The program has grown over the years and today offers many services that are uniquely available only through IRIS. IRIS provides services to six counties in southeastern MN – Dodge, LeSueur, Goodhue, Rice, Steele, Waseca, and is growing. On average, IRIS services are received by nearly 7,000 people a year, and for each child that dies IRIS spends approximately $450 in the first year following the death. These numbers add up, and in order to continue to provide the unique quality services – fundraisers like the 1st Annual 5K Turkey Trot are necessary.
Registration and Check-in opens at 7:30 a.m., Kids Fun Run starts at 8 a.m. (inside the dome), 5K timed run starts at 8:30 a.m. (outside), and 5K walk starts at 8:40 a.m. (outside). Prizes will be awarded to the top male and top female runners and all kids participating in the Fun Run (approximately one half mile). Cost is $20 for pre-registration for adults and $12 for kids participating in the Fun Run ($25/$12 for on-site). All registrants will receive a free race T-shirt (while supplies last), refreshments, and the ability to create a “team fundraising page” on the IRIS Web site: www.IrisRemembers.com
This event is open to the public – and everyone is encouraged to join us Thanksgiving morning. Those unable to participate are encouraged to come out and cheer on runners and walkers or donated to the event.
