Fair Talk: SCFF Annual Meeting

The 2009 annual meeting of the Steele County Agricultural Society was held on Thursday, Nov. 5, in Owatonna. Five directors were re-elected to serve on the fair board of directors for three years terms. Those directors include Paul Arnfelt, Dan Deml, Bill Hartle, Roger Noble and Marlyn Zacharias.
The 91st Steele County Free Fair recorded a gross income of $875,347. Expenses were $782,788 for a gross profit of $92,559 according to treasurer Dan Deml. Major improvements of $39,268 including new camping locations, renovating the beer garden, road repairs, electrical and water service leaving a net profit of $53,291.
Fair attendance in 2009 was 282,803 which is the third highest ever. Beer sales totaled 57,977 twelve ounce beer cups which is a record. Mega-Ride ticket sales hit 4,549. Concession rental was up $15, 244 for a total of $274,765 representing about 525 stands and booths at the fair. There were 311 booths in the Four Seasons Centre. Vendors came from 25 states and Canada. ATM transactions were up 5.2 percent and carnival revenue was $101,763. Grandstand revenue was down because of three shows that had to be canceled due to rain.
A total of $37,321 was paid out in premiums to exhibitors in 19 departments and 4-H. Culinary Arts again brought in the most entries at 774.
Inducted into the Steele County Livestock Hall of Fame this were Joe Stransky and Marvin Meixner. Inducted into the Equine Hall of Fame were Maynard and Bev Lueth, Bob and Pat Fisher and the horse Ferzon.
The Board of Directors of the Steele County Free Fair met following the annual meeting and re-elected the following officers: President: Corky Ebeling, Vice President, Bruce Busho, Treasurer, Dan Deml and Secretary-Manager, Elmer Reseland.
Dates of the 2010 Steele County Free Fair are Aug. 17-22. The new free attraction on the Merriam Midway will be the “Galaxy Girl” performing on the highest sway pole in the world.
