OWATONNA — Before his death in February 2008, artist Bob Bowman took a look at the body of his work — which ranges from calligraphy to watercolor paintings — and he wondered if anybody would remember him.

His children, Linda (Butenhoff) and Robert E. Bowman assured him that he would certianly be remembered. Now they are setting out to prove it.

Bowman, Butenhoff and her husband, Earl Butenhoff, have presented the Steele County Free Fair board a plan for what would be the “Bob Bowman Art Center,” to be built on the fairgrounds.

“We wanted to do something in my dad’s name so that he would be remembered,” said Linda Butenhoff.  “The idea behind it all is not just for my dad’s stuff but that this would become the new art exhibit building. We want to maybe use it year round.”

The building would house art exhibits during the fair and could host different events throughout the year, but Linda Butenhoff said a corner of the building would continually house her father’s legacy.

Earl Butenhoff said the building is planned to be about 32 feet by 72 feet around the perimeter.

Bob Bowman arrived in Owatonna after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended an art school in Chicago and became a commercial artist. He was a long-time employee of Jostens, working as a lettering artist for class rings and other Jostens products.

Bowman was involved in ring design until his retirement in 1982.

In 1996, Bowman entered an International Handwriting Competition and tied for second place.

Fair Board President Corky Ebeling presented the  information about the building in a joint meeting  with the Steele County Free Fair. Ebeling said the plans are very preliminary but the fair board is interested in moving forward.

A new building will have to be approved by the Steele County Board of Commissioners but if the board OKs plans to move forward, Bob Bowman’s family is hoping to begin raising funds for the building. possibly with a matching grant from the Owatonna Foundation and with estate funds.

“I just wish my Dad was still alive to see this happening,” Butenhoff said.

Bob was definately one of the greats that Josten's employed. Not only was he a great artist, but he was a man of character and a humanitarian. I can always remember Bob's gentle smile and his kind manner. This truly is a positive plan his family is proposing for a man that was always willing to give of himself. Thinking back over the years at Jostens it amazes me the number of talented artists and jewler craftsman that they employeed. As I read our daily paper it seems we continualy read of new faces that have shown their talents in art, music or design. Owatonna, Steele County and the surrounding area seemed to always have been blessed with this talent. Bob was an inspiration to many, it seems like it only fitting that his presence and inspiration still be a part of our area. This is definately a donation fund raising project that will be worth the investment.

I concur that Bob was a real gentleman and talented artist worthy of remembering. But it also occurs to me that we already have an Art Center and I am concerned how the "other events" held through the year would compete with the Arts Center.
Perhaps an agreement could be worked out with the Historical Society that in exchange for funding a portion of the new building would provide a permanent exhibit honoring the history of all talented artists in Owatonna including Bob. This would complement not compete with the Historical Society fund drive and would provide a memorial that could be enjoyed year around not just fair week.

I would wonder if anyone has contemplated the idea of using the funds to make improvements to the current art center and facilities. And in turn Bob's work could be permanently displayed there. I think this would be a great tribute to him and would utilize what Owatonna already has.
