NORTHFIELD — Owatonna once again showed its depth, but without a strong frontrunner, the Huskies missed out on a couple of team goals. The Huskies finished 11th at the Class AA State Cross Country Meet on Saturday morning at St. Olaf College.

Owatonna also finished 11th in 2007 and placed fourth last year. Owatonna had hoped to finish in the top 10 and ahead of Lakeville North, which defeated the Huskies at the Section 1AA Meet. The Panthers, led by sophomore Ben Saxton (18th overall), placed ninth. Eden Prairie won the Class AA title. The Huskies’ coaching staff felt confident after the race that Owatonna held off North after Owatonna’s No. 5 runner, Cameron Peterson, finished 25 spots faster than the Panthers’ No. 5 runner. But North was able build a big enough lead with its first four runners finishing in the top 103. Owatonna had six runners finish the five-kilometer race in less than 18 minutes.

Justin Velzke was the Huskies’ top finisher. He ran the course in 16:49, good enough for 46th place. Tommy Kraus (65th, 17:02) was Owatonna’s No. 2 runner after running No. 3 last month. Leif Peterson was 92nd with a time of 17:15.

“I was kind of disappointed with my run today,” Leif Peterson said. “It kind of makes me want to train hard and get back here again next year.”

Ryan Emanuelson (113th, 17:32), Cameron Peterson (116th, 17:35), Spencer Versteeg (139th, 17:58) and Collin Buck (150th, 18:12) were Owatonna’s other runners in the 160-runner field.

“That’s what’s nice about this team is that if someone is off a little bit, someone else will pick them up,” Chatelaine said.”‘We have a lot of depth, which is what you want to have with a team.”

The race was run under sunny skies on a dry course. The last time Owatonna ran a race it was on a rainy day on a muddy track.

“It was fun to run in the mud once or twice,” Velzke said, “but I wouldn’t want to do it more than that.”
