Help keep a neighbor warm this winter
Email Print
Talk to the folks at Steele County Clothesline and they will tell you that there’s a direct correlation between the economy and the number of people using their services. The lower the economy sinks, the higher the number seeking clothing from Clothesline. And recently, they say, the numbers have been up. Currently, about 2,000 people are registered for their services and over the course of the year, the non-profit has seen a significant increase in its client base. The Clothesline is registering about five families a week, and it’s likely to get even busier as winter approaches and folks need warmer clothes.
And that’s where the community comes in.
The Clothesline is now coming to homestretch of its annual coat drive — a drive that seeks new or slightly used coats to help keep people warm during the cold Minnesota winter. The drive is set to come to an end on Sunday, and the Clothesline could use some help. As of Monday, the Clothesline had collected 231 coats — well below its usual number of about 500 coats. Yes, some local churches that participate in the program still haven’t brought in their donations, and there’s a chance that when the churches bring in their coats the goal will have been met.
Still, with more and more people using the services of the Clothesline, we’re certain that even more coats will be needed. In fact, Clothesline officials are saying that it’s not just coats that they need. More winter wear, especially snow jackets and pants for children, are needed.
We all know how cold Minnesota winters can be. And certainly, none of us want to think about folks, especially children, going out in the frigid temperatures without the proper clothing. So, if you have the means to do so, we encourage you to make a donation of some winter clothing to the Clothesline. It’s needed now more than ever.
