ABERDEEN, S.D. — Maurice H. ‘Morrie’ Richards, 82, of Aberdeen died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
He was born July 13, 1927, on the family farm south of Ipswich, S.D., the son of Henry and Edna (Evans) Richard. He attended country grade school and graduated from Ipswich High School in 1945.
On Nov. 27, 1948, he married Florence Adler at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. They farmed for 41 years in the Ipswich area until retiring and moving to Aberdeen in 1989. During his farming years, he served on the Cresbard School Board, Faulk County School Board, FHA Board and the Emerson Township Board.
After retirement, he was a volunteer at Avera St. Luke’s for 18 years and delivered meals on wheels. He was a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen at the time of his death. He also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge and Elks Club.
He is survived his wife, Florence; four daughters, Reenie Malsom and Mary Gjernes, both of Aberdeen, Monie Fix of Owatonna, and Susan Thayer of Rapid City, S.D.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Morgan, and a sister, Frances.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen, with the Rev. Kevin Zilverberg and the Rev. Charles Emezie officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
A liturgical wake service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary & Crematory in Aberdeen. Friends may call at the mortuary from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today and at the church an hour prior to the funeral on Monday.
