Arnold Matthew Burg
1917 — 2009
OWATONNA — Arnold Matthew Burg, 91, of Caledonia, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Traditions Assisted Living Center in Owatonna. He was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Caledonia to Philip and Cecelia (Ernster) Burg. He married Betty Mullarkey on Oct. 18, 1947, at Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing, Iowa.
Arnold farmed on the family farm outside Caledonia until he retired in 1988 and moved to Caledonia. He moved to Owatonna in 2008.
Arnold had a lifelong love of the land. During his retirement he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and family and he enjoyed woodworking. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Parish, Caledonia.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Owatonna; his children, Roger (Susan) and Ralph (Marilyn), both of Caledonia, Arlene (John) Pohling of LaCrescent, Jane (Mark) Morley of Owatonna, and Gina (Dan) Iverson of Westby, Wisc.; 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Jen), Alyssa (Scott), Christopher, Cindy, and Becky Burg, Jena and Kristi Poling, Lindsey, Mara, and Caitlin Morley and Jack Iverson; three great grandchildren, Abby Wruck, Izabelle and Alek Burg; a brother, Al Burg of Waukon, IA; and a sister, Celesta Sullivan of Caledonia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Armella Palen, Leona Weichert and Cordula Brady.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 453 S. Pine St., Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday before the service at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s Church. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia is assisting the family with arrangements.
Arnold’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Traditions Assisted Living for their love and support during Arnold’s stay there.
