OWATONNA — The sixth annual ‘MS Jam’ fundraiser for multiple sclerosis will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Owatonna fairgrounds.
Cost is $6 in advance and $10 at the gate. Tickets are available at Cash Wise, Hy-Vee, Kottke Jewelers, and MS Jam committee members.
Local event founder Scott Spinler announced the following highlights of planned entertainment and activities:
• Live music by Ali Gray, who returns to share her unique blend of country/soul/rock music, including songs from her album “Let You In.” (Gray is a long-time backup singer for ‘Gear Daddies’ Martin Zellar.)
New to MS Jam is American Roadhouse of Owatonna, performing rock, honky-tonk and blues. As in past years, DJ/entertainment will also be provided by Eagle Wings of Owatonna.
• Live and silent auctions will feature goods donated by local businesses and individuals.
Notable items include a four-day Caribbean cruise for two people, one week at cabin on Cass Lake by Bemidji, delicious dinner for six made and served, “dessert of the month” gift for a year, “case of beer of the month” gift for a year, Fuller vacuum ($400 value), and a year of free movies at Northwoods Cinema.
• New this year is a raffle – each ticket $5 – with great prizes including 32” LCD TV, motorized gas-powered scooter for adults and portable GPS navigation system.
• Famous Dave’s will again be selling food, donating all receipts. Domino’s Pizza will also be sold.
• A block of discounted rooms is available at Holiday Inn, by calling (507) 446-8900 up to one week ahead.
• A “sober ride” service will serve the local area.
“The economic downturn is making organizing this event more challenging than in recent years, but our volunteer committee is committed to this important cause,” said Spinler. “This event’s impressive track record of growth is a testament to the many long-term supporters who get behind us each year, along with important new contributors.”
The amount raised by MS Jam has risen consistently every year, reaching $20,000 in 2008. “Every contribution is vitally important,” Spinler concluded.
Spinler, 43, began raising funds for MS research back in elementary school in Owatonna and has since received national recognition for his volunteer efforts. He says the committee welcomes donated items for the auctions or raffle, along with monetary contributions.
Event tickets are available at Hy-Vee, Cashwise and Kottke Jewelers in Owatonna for $6, or at the door for $10. Raffle tickets are available for $5.00 from any MS Jam Committee member or at the event.
All proceeds from this local event will support the Minnesota chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a non-profit organization supporting research aimed at helping the 10,000 estimated people in Minnesota and western Wisconsin who are living with MS – 100 in Steele County, Minn., alone.
According to www.nationalmssociety.org, approximately 400,000 Americans acknowledge having MS, and every week about 200 people are diagnosed. Worldwide, MS may affect 2.5 million individuals.
