Michael Joseph Sweeney
1940 — 2009

OWATONNA — Michael Joseph Sweeney, 68, of Owatonna died Monday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Cedarview Care Center in Owatonna.
Michael was born the son of Thomas and Irene (McNallan) Sweeney on July 20, 1940, in Rochester. He was raised on the family farm in Zumbro Falls. He attended grade school at St. Mary’s Academy in Lake City and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959. He worked for a feed mill and on the family farm until he entered the Army in June of 1963. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966, he was honorably discharged in 1966. He was united in marriage to Joan McLaughlin at St. Clements Catholic Church in Hammond, Minn. on Aug. 14, 1965. They resided in El Paso, Texas until Michael was deployed to Vietnam. When he returned from the service they lived in Rochester and rural Zumbro Falls until relocating to Owatonna in January of 1968.
Michael worked for the MN Highway Dept. for 14 years. He then worked at the Apco gas station, VFW and Cash Wise Foods where he retired in July of 2005. Michael enjoyed fishing, Old Time and Country Music, working Pancake Breakfasts at the VFW, mowing his 5 acres on his John Deere lawn tractor and spending time with family and his many nieces and nephews. He was also very proud of his Irish Heritage. Michael was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW and also a life member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years; sisters Marie Heise, Lake City, Catherine (Kenneth) Atkinson, Red Wing and Elaine (Tony) Horne, New Market, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas, James (Pat) and John Sweeney
Mass of Christian Burial is set for Friday, Sept. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Owatonna. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, with Military Rites by the Steele County Funeral Unit. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. There will be a parish rosary at 3:45 p.m. at the church on Thursday. The visitation will continue one hour before the funeral liturgy on Friday.
