Staff reports

MEDFORD — A 9-year-old Faribault boy was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving was hit by a car in rural Medford Thursday evening.

The boy, Nathan Jilek, was driving the four-wheeler on property owned by a relative when he drove onto the 8400 block of 47th Avenue Northwest from behind some bushes, said Steele County Chief Deputy Milo Dahlin. Because of the bushes, the boy could not be readily seen from the roadway, Dahlin said.

Diane Sammon of rural Rice County was driving southbound on the road shortly after 6 p.m. when the boy came out from behind the bushes and onto the street, Dahlin said. Sammon hit the brakes and skidded before striking the boy.

Nathan, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, suffered a broken leg and possible internal injuries, Dahlin said. Mayo One was called to the scene and the boy was airlifted to Rochester.

Officials at St. Marys did not release information about his condition.

To comment on the extreme comments made by Walz-do, where does it say in the article that the boy's parents were even at the home where he was riding? And, you should be a little more compasionate to these hurting parents right now!!!! As parents, we NEVER want for something like this to happen to a child!!! Those who think that "very strict" supervision will prevent any harm from a child ever occuring are saying they can control all...impossible!!! You owe these parents an apology!!!!

Walz-do,
I know this family very well and the parents were not there at the time of the accident and love their son very much. There heart breaks for their son.
If the ATV riding age is 16 then why are your kids (ages 11 and 14) on the ATV since you feel so STRONGLY about this. All children at one time or another have disobey rules. This young man is suffeing for his actions as are his parents. Next time, please try to think before you speak - Judge not lest ye be judged.

wow i guess you have to be "A honor roll" kids to be good and responsible kids. Hope those "A honor roll" kids of yours learn some compassion from somewhere because it is not from you Walz-do. Yes that is a violation of the law...but at this point I think the condition of the young boy is much more important than judging parents..I am sure they get the drift now. And name calling is never acceptable...grow up.

A honor roll with a parent that can't communuicate without being a jerk. Your kids are lucky. Think how much further along they would be with a decent parent.

I don't see the comment that riled everyone up. Where is it or what did it say???

It was some mean-spirited comment about the "moron parents". I know his parents deeply love their young son & are extremely saddened by this tragic accident. I'm assuming someone reported the comment to the Press & they deleted it, as it was a personal attack.
