Boy struck by car in rural Medford

MEDFORD — A 9-year-old Faribault boy was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving was hit by a car in rural Medford Thursday evening.
The boy, Nathan Jilek, was driving the four-wheeler on property owned by a relative when he drove onto the 8400 block of 47th Avenue Northwest from behind some bushes, said Steele County Chief Deputy Milo Dahlin. Because of the bushes, the boy could not be readily seen from the roadway, Dahlin said.
Diane Sammon of rural Rice County was driving southbound on the road shortly after 6 p.m. when the boy came out from behind the bushes and onto the street, Dahlin said. Sammon hit the brakes and skidded before striking the boy.
Nathan, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, suffered a broken leg and possible internal injuries, Dahlin said. Mayo One was called to the scene and the boy was airlifted to Rochester.

My thoughts and prayers are with this boy and his family, as well as those who are tending to his physical needs.
