OWATONNA — The Steele County Board approved the sale of bonds totaling $8 million, which will be paid back over the next five years.

The money from the bonds will be used for road projects as well as Steele County’s part of the 800 megahertz public safety communications system, money for sheriff equipment, highway equipment and capitalized interest.

The bid was awarded to the low bid of Wells Fargo which will charge interest at about 2.92 percent.

Road projects expected to begin this year include striping, paving of County State Aid Highway 4 near Hope, and from CSAH 45 to CSAH 3 and paving of County Road 182 from CSAH 21 to CSAH 4. Bids for those projects are expected to be opened July 23.

In other county news:

Bids were awarded for the county’s annual road striping project. County engineer Anita Benson estimated the project at $122,016. The lowest bidder, Traffic Marketing Service, Inc. was awarded the project with a bid of $85,821. The bid was 29.66 percent lower than the engineer’s estimate. The second bid received was also lower than the engineer’s estimate by 26.26 percent.
