MEDFORD — Thomas Schroht did not waste any time.
In his first throw at the Class A State Boys Track and Field Meet, the Medford senior tossed the shot put 52 feet, 7 inches. The throw was the best of the day for Schroht and good enough for second place.
“I threw my personal best by almost two feet,” Schroht said. “There wasn’t anything more I could have done.”
Anthony Lavoy of Mahnomen/Waubun won the shot put competition Friday at Hamline University with a throw of 54-8 3/4. Lavoy’s best put was also his first throw of the day.
After throwing 52-7, Schroht actually led the competition for a couple of throwers. He was then in second place as 10 state qualifiers made a combined 36 throws.
“I felt a little pressure, but not too much,” Schroht said. “(The stress) was a lot worse at sections. I was so glad to get here; I was just going to enjoy it.”
With Schroht’s second-place finish, Medford finished the state meet with 10 points, the most in boys coach Kevin Werk’s career. That total could grow on Saturday as Schroht competes in the discus competition.
While Schroht’s season continues, a few other local athletes saw their seasons end.
NRHEG’s Alyssa Kerkhoff failed to make it into 200-meter dash final. She ran the half lap in 26.92 seconds during Friday’s prelims. She needed a time of 26.05 to make the final.
Fellow Panther Heather Schmit placed 14th in the long jump with a leap of 16-2. td>

Cody Christian of Triton finished in 12th place in the shot put with a throw of 47-1 1/4.
On Saturday, NRHEG’s David Lindell will throw the discus with Schroht.
Triton senior Carmen Sutherland advanced to the 100 finals with a time of 12.38. Sutherland won her heat and had the second-fastest time in prelims. Ashley Tingelstad of East Grand Forks (12.42) had the fastest time.
Triton’s 400 and 800 relay teams will compete on Saturday. There were no prelims for the 800 relay, so the Cobras took the day off. The 400 relay team of Maddie Nerenhausen, Cydney Head, Abby Nerenhausen and Sutherland finished second in their heat with a time of 49.78, good enough to advance to the finals. |
