Jan. 31: Express-Alexandria notebook

Owatonna's Jon Quinlivan, left, takes a bite out of a hot dog during an eating contest during the second intermission Saturday at the Four Seasons Centre. Quinlivan and the other competitors lost to Jim Thompson, center, who won with 6 1/2 dogs eaten.
GOING GREEN
The Blizzard broke out some new uniforms for Saturday night’s game. Alexandria wore green sweaters with navy blue breezers and green socks. The look was very different from Friday’s white jerseys.

SUPER FAN
Owatonna forward Josh Daley will have a slightly higher interest than any of his teammtes in Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Daley is from Pittsburgh and grew up a Steelers fan.

“I never played football, but growing up in Pittsburgh, pretty much everybody is a Steelers fan,” said Daley, who will watch the game with his teammates at Mary Beth Spitzack’s house. “It will be a lot of fun. Mary’s a great cook and I know there will be some great food there.”

Daley said most of the team is pulling for Pittsburgh, though he admitted he has tried to push a lot of his teammates in that direction.

LOTS OF FUN
The Express pulled out all the stops when it came to fun stuff at the Four Seasons Centre on Saturday as part of Viracon Night. With nearly 1,200 fans in attendance, there was a silent auction, a raffle, a clown, face painting, hair coloring and several contests.

The woman that won the air guitar contest looked like she had never done it before, but she did well enough with Van Halen’s “Eruption” to win the crowd vote.

During the hot dog eating contest, the seven contestants had three minutes to eat 10 hot dogs. Nobody finished all 10 dogs and the winner only got down 6 1/2 hot dogs.

BROKEN RINK
Early in the third period, Express defenseman Marian Fiala got checked hard into the boards and a piece of plastic snapped off the top of the glass. The game was delayed about three minutes while a member of the Four Seasons Centre staff replaced the broken stabilizer.
